Mayor Suarez pushes #MiamiTech with efforts to make Miami “the crypto capital of the US”. An RFP for incorporating Bitcoin into city business is imminent.
Mayor Francis Suarez continues pushing #MiamiTech with his efforts to make the City of Miami “the crypto capital of the United States or of the world.” One of the city’s top priorities is creating a system allowing Bitcoin as a payment option, both for employees being paid and for citizens to pay taxes and fees. A formal RFP for meeting these goals is considered imminent.
Mining the Opportunity
Back in February, Suarez pushed for this RFP. It would have also integrated Bitcoin into the city. This would allow taxes and fees to be paid in Bitcoin, employees to be paid in Bitcoin, and the city itself to invest in Bitcoin. While the resolution received support from city commissioners, the proposal required further review.
“If we would’ve been able to hold it from the moment that I put the resolution on our agenda, it’d be up by 30 or 40 percent, so I would’ve looked like a genius back then,” Mayor Suarez said. “But that’s the way it works.”
Despite Florida statutes not currently allowing the City of Miami to hold Bitcoin, the Mayor has received support at the county level. County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, of District 8, made the same moves on acounty level. The County Cryptocurrency Task Force is currently in the process of conducting research, surveying residents, and preparing its recommendations due in March 2022.
