Miami-Dade Vice-Chairman Oliver G. Gilbert, III, and Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins have created a resolution to direct the county mayor to create a working group to pursue Urban Air Mobility (UAM) Systems. The group, if established, will have 120 days to report on a plan to develop and implement a system in Miami-Dade County. You can find the full report on the resolutionhere.
What is Urban Air Mobility?
UAM is an aviation term for on-demand and automated passenger air transportation services, most typically flown without a pilot. In a city full of cars and the congestion that comes with them, UAMs offer an opportunity to reduce road and mass transit congestion. City air taxis are currently in use in Mexico City, while Tokyo and NY use helicopter-based UAM.
NASAhas actually been a prominent leader in UAM. They are reviewing how to make it safer and more scalable, but they’re not the only ones. Start-ups and large corporations alike and making plays in UAM. Well-known names like Airbus, Toyota, Hyundai, and Boeing are investing in the expectation of the market soaring over the next 20 years.
For UAM to become a reality, advances will need to be made and hurdles will need to be overcome, hence the need for a working group to evaluate it for the county. The ‘flying taxis’ of the future will have to become more cost-effective and feasible to the consumer. They will also need to overcome the noise impact, cybersecurity issues, and airspace issues, especially around large, complex airports, like MIA. Creating a system that works, while taking advantage of the burgeoning technology will be the task of the group.
