CARES Act and the School System
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act”) created a $30.7 billion fund for states to spend on education. The Elementary and Secondary School Relief Fund will receive $13.2 billion from it. According toCongresswoman Frederica S. Wilson, $173,500,000 will be allocated to Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
CARES funds are allocated to specific uses in the K-12 relief fund. These include
Providing principals and other school leaders with resources necessary to include the needs of their individual schoolDeveloping and implementing procedures and systems to improve the preparedness and response efforts of local educational agencies.Planning for and coordinating during long-term closures, including how to provide technology for online learning.Purchasing educational technology (including hardware, software, and connectivity) for students who are served by the local educational agency that aids in regular and substantive educational interaction between students and their classroom instructors, including low-income students and students with disabilities, which may include assistive technology or adaptive equipment.
CARES Act and County Projects
The CARES Act also allocated $500 billion in aid to state and local governments. These funds would directly impact major projects within Miami-Dade County. It remains unclear as to how exactly these funds will have an impact on projects currently in the pipeline. Some projects already in the pipeline which may receive funding include capital improvements projects like the Miami International Airport renovations or local transportation projects.
