Building on the momentum of its 2019 deal to provide electric buses to Miami-Dade County, Proterra announced an additional order of 42 Proterra ZX5+ electric transit buses. They feature a total of 19 megawatt-hours of battery storage capacity. Also included in the deal are plans to install 75 Proterra chargers across three bus depots.
This will bring Miami-Dade’s total number of 40’ electric buses to 75 in the coming years, as delivery is slated to begin in 2022!
Miami-Dade County Leading the Way.
In recent years, and continuing under Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Miami has made a strong commitment to reducing fossil fuel consumption. The initial goals included maintaining a fleet of buses with at least half of them being electrically powered by 2035. The acquisition of 75 buses helps meet that goal. Transitioning to zero-emission buses presents a critical opportunity to cut pollution, reduce oil dependence, and support a healthier community. With zero tailpipe emissions or pollutants, Proterra battery-electric buses eliminate about 230,000 pounds of CO2 emissions annually for every diesel vehicle replaced by a zero-emission bus.
“This is a major step forward in Miami-Dade County’s commitment to incorporate clean, renewable energy to protect our environment and offer better transportation options,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “With these new electric buses, Miami-Dade will lead the way with the largest sustainable transportation fleet in Florida and one of the largest in the nation.”
While maintaining previous Mayor Gimenez's stance on carbon emissions, Mayor Cava, @MayorDaniella, is also pushing for initiatives to help the quality of the water of Biscayne Bay. City of Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, @FrancisSuarez, is also pushing initiatives on water quality. Mayor Cava is also pushing to reduce pollution and preserve the Everglades.
